Event results

We had a new course this year due to Newlands College being closed due to drought. Down the road at Onslow however, there was no sign of drought, having had several days of rain. On the day however we managed to squeeze the races into a break in the weather perfectly.



The course was a mix of pavement and flat grass. The start and finish was outside the gymnasium, and the course followed the road up and round behind the school, past the skateboard park, through the tennis courts and up the steep path onto the top field. Then a lap of the field, dropping back down to the skateboard park, and turning right to repeat the tennis court/top field loop. The course finished with a long and fast downhill all the way back to the gymnasium.



Great to see a big turnout (more than 90) and many new faces.



Today our short race (800m) was won by McKay and our 1km race was won by last year's third placegetter, Jack Julian, who is coming off a great track season. Jack was followed in by Will Anthony and Bex Jenkins.



The Maiden, for those who have never won a harriers race before (by grade), was taken out by new member and track runner Pieter Pretorius. He was followed closely by Elroy Lederman and new member Jono Leach. Pieter's time was only 3 seconds behind the winning Perston time - the smallest difference between the two winning times in memory. Elroy's time would have seen him third-equal in the Perston - another very impressive result.



And Sean cruised to a win in the Perston Memorial, regaining the trophy he won two years ago. He was followed in by junior Matt Croxford who outkicked Mike Waterman on the finish straight.



As always, the Maiden and Perston are also sealed handicap races: the handicap winners are those who beat their estimated times by the greatest margins. Josh Platt was the Maiden handicap winner, for beating his estimated time by 2:30, and Ben Ives was the Perston Memorial handicap winner, for beating his handicap time by 1:58.



Finally, the handicapper noted a couple of runners in the Maiden who have won races before, and refused to give them a placing because they should have been in the Perston!
