Pomona (Australia) / Kawerau King of the Mountain 29 Jul 2004.
New Zealand’s Michael Wakelin (Wellington Olympic) maintained Kiwi domination of the Pomona King of the Mountain race in Australia on Sunday.
Wakelin bagged his second Pomona crown in a time of 24 minutes 13 seconds, with Aussies Neil Labinsky and Ben Holland following him home from the 438m high Mt Cooroora summit.
Organiser Colin Jackson said the day was perfect weather, about 24C and dry, with record crowds swelling the tiny hinterland town for the day’s festivities.
“The only problem was the track was too dry and a little slippery. This was reflected in the times,” Jackson said.
Australians Tony Smith (veterans) and Kim Beckinsale (women) won their respective classes and are expected to join Labinsky (open men) and Holland (junior men) for the reverse leg of the mountain-running double, Pomona’s sister event, the Tasman King of the Mountain Race at Kawerau, NZ, on October 30.
