Ambassador Wanted for Senshu International Marathon 30 Sep 2009.

Wellington Sakai Association is seeking a marathon runner to be an ambassador for Wellington City to compete in our Sister City’s (Sakai) annual event, the Senshu International Marathon.

Every year, around this time, the Wellington Sakai Association organises this promotion where one person from Wellington City (does not include Porirua or Hutt Cities) travels free to Sakai, in Japan, for an all expenses paid week.

Wellington’s representative stays in both hotel and homestay accomodation, visits various attractions and cultural facilities in the Sakai, Osaka and Kyoto area and formally meets the Mayor of Sakai.

Next year’s event is on 21 February 2010 with travel dates being 18th and 26th February. Snow fell during last year’s event whereas this year the weather was considerably warmer. The wonderful experience coupled with the amazing hospitality of the Japanese people, combine to provide a rewarding and memorable week. Fourteen Wellingtonians can attest to this.

Runners need to be able to complete the mostly flat course in 4 hours or less, therefore many people in Wellington will be 'time eligible' (not just the elite). Also the applicants need to be over 18 years of age, fit and healthy and keen to embrace and participate in the ambassadorial role and sister-city relationship.

Application forms are available at Wellington City Council, Wellington Public Library and all branch libraries, pools and council recreation centres. Also throughout Wellington and the suburbs, forms have been distributed to sports shops and health and fitness centres. Any enquiries can be made to Bev Hodge ph 232 3246 or Tom Yuan ph 803 8513. Applications must be received by Tuesday 10 November with the draw on Newstalk ZB All Sports Breakfast on 14 November.

Note: Club member Tim Horne was the lucky recipient this year; talk to him to hear of his experiences!
