Grand Memorial Races and Old Members’ Day, and Quiz Night 23 Jul 2002.

Saturday the 3rd of August sees our last cross-country race before the road season starts (unless you’re going to the nationals): the Grand Memorial open-handicap cross country race and Old Members’ Day. It is also our annual quiz night.

The Grand Memorial holds a special place in the club’s history. It commemorates former members of the club, and in particular those who gave their lives in one of the two world wars.

There are a number of significant trophies up for grabs at this race. Some of these trophies date back to the early days of the club when they were competed for in three separate races, until they were combined into one handicap race in 1929. Of special note are the Philp Memorial Cup and the Byrne Memorial Cup, both of which remember founding members killed in World War I, and the 1939-45 Memorial Cup which remembers the then club-champ and an up-coming club-champ who were both killed in World War II. Another of the trophies was originally a rowing trophy awarded for races held on the River Thames.

Wellington Harriers have been invited to attend the race and the quiz.
